A classic of Victorian scholarship. The book is academic, of course. But the subject matter tends to spice things up. Along the way you learn how radically the development of 20th-century technology (electricity, gas, combustion engines, indoor plumbing) changed the quality of life, people's customs, and their outlook on life. Compared to our time, the Victorian era was in many ways a different planet.

Ben Prusinski is an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Oracle ACE Director, and database architect with more than 14 years of experience with Oracle data warehouse and Oracle E-Business applications. As a corporate database consultant, he has provided services to dozens of Fortune-500 clients. Ben is an internationally recognized expert in Oracle high availability, database replication, database migrations, performance tuning, database security, and ERP implementations. He is also a popular speaker at major conferences such as Oracle OpenWorld, IOUG, and Oracle Collaborate.

Gustavo Gonzalez, Oracle ACE, began working with Oracle in the late 1990s as a Business Systems Analyst for Nike Argentina where he helped rollout Oracle Financials 10.7. This book teases the audience with a variety of topics not previously covered in many other books written about Oracle E Business Suite and leaves the user wanting more.
It is an informative read for technical consultants who are trying to get a grasp of the functional applications which make up the R12 Oracle E Business Suite.
The book covers a huge spectrum of modules from different business areas.
Other authors have tried to focus on specific areas such as Finance or Supply Chain but gone into much greater depth giving hands on exercises which can be used to practice the implementation and support of each module.
This particular tome covers Financials, Supply Chain and Projects. The materials are ideally laid out for senior executives to work with a project manager at the Business Analysis stage and understand at a high level the principles of each module and the decisions that have to be taken to implement each module.
The book stops short of showing detailed screen shots and exercises to implement the modules. This material would be covered by attending an Oracle University course specific to each module or working closely with a functional consultant hired to implement the modules on your project.

My gut feel is that the book is trying to do too much in one volume. It may be an idea for the authors to focus on a specific target audience and give them more depth.
I did like the overviews of E Business Suite Tax, Credit management and Sub ledger Accounting.
The presentation on Business Intelligence is informative and fairly detailed which describes one of the key features Oracle has promoted in release 12 . If I were the authors I would expand this chapter greatly and actually start from the point of view of a dissatisfied executive who cant get ready access to their enterprise information. Build on the steps required to take the business requirements to configuring, testing and using the Business Intelligence dashboards.
I would also want a discussion on the pro's and cons of the various tools out there on the market and which one suits E Business Suite in different scenario's.

Excellent book and companion to the RHCE study guide!

This book was written with the intentions of being used with Michael Jang's other RHCSA / RHCE Study Guide (http://www.amazon.com/RHCSA-Linux-Certification-Study-Edition/dp/0071765654/)

I have both of these books. I used the RHCSA / RHCE study guide to earn my RHCE a few months ago, but I also have this companion as a tool to keep sharp. This is another well written, well thought out book by Mr. Jang. He gives excellent exercises and examples in the text, and they are all designed to work in tandem with the virtual machines he includes on the DVD that ships with the book. He gives great instructions for setting up the virtual machines in the book, which essentially gives you a perfect "Practice Lab" that is essential to retaining the RHCE knowledge.

If you are looking at this book, I assume you know that the Red Hat exams are purely practical and very difficult. With both of Mr. Jangs study guide and companion (this book), you will have everything you need to go from barely knowing linux, to being able to master both the RHCSA and RHCE exams. I have been fortunate to attend actual Red Hat training, and these books were the perfect study companion as well.

I honestly cant give this book a good enough review it is that good. I can only attest that without these books, earning my RHCE would have been *difficult*. In the linux field, this is the most highly recommend books for Red Hat based distributions. Not only will they serve you well in preparation for the exams, they will give you years of benefit as a solid desk reference. Mr. Jang gives great explanations of the How's and Why's of each subject, that you actually learn the materials.

Just be ware, This book is designed to be used as the companion to his main study guide. I would recommend that you buy both of Mr. Jang's Red Hat books if you are planning to sit for the exams. Read them. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter, answer the questions. Don't move on to the next chapter until you feel you have mastered the current one. The questions and exercises he gives in both the Study Guide and this Companion are designed to reinforce the material he taught in that chapter. The books are also well laid out, in that you will learn all the tools you need first, before you move on to the advanced chapters.

Concise, thorough, well written

Pre-ordered this book before it was released and got it early. It's great. It assumes very little knowledge to begin with which was frustrating at first because I was looking for a review. This book was recommended to me by a RedHat instructor. The author's preface goes on and on about how this is not a replacement for instruction from RedHat, and so on. Hooey on that. If you have access to a decent 64-bit computer (required by the virtual machines that come with the book), and a CentOS iso (or you can download one), you will be well on your way toward mastery. Read the book, do the exercises, read the recommended reading and take the assesment tests on RedHat's site, and you'll do fine. Aced the RHCSA and feel comfortable with testing for RHCE which I will do early December.
I recommend this book to anyone really dedicated to RedHat certification. There is a lot of work to do on your part; this book is merely a guide, but it is a very competent guide.

Good book, good practice questions & exams - not so great VMs

I'll start off by saying that I own both the Study Guide and this Practice Exams guide. Many people in my office have purchased copies and find these to be the most useful, authoritative prep out there for these exams.

Thanks Mike Jang for keeping this series current.

Now for my gripes:

1. I expected that the contents of the physical book would be included as PDFs on the DVD or within the gamma VM as I'm accustomed to from the study guide. They are not.

2. The practice VMs idea had promise, but I found the execution to not have turned out so great. I think this would have been better of as a compressed folder that you'd drop on the home dir of your main VM, perhaps with a simple shell script to do any VM customization (not really necessary). You're far better served by standing up 3 current Scientific Linux 6.3 VMs on a Scientific Linux 6.3 physical box using virt-manager, then copying the exam and lab files and folders over to your own VMs.

The McGraw Hill YUM repository included in the VM's yum.repos.d is worthless at best and troublesome at worst (broken mirror errors galore) - if you use the VMs make sure you just disable those right away and use the proper Scientific Linux repositories.

All in all a good book, if I could do half-stars I'd give it a 3.5.

I strongly believe, that better path cannot be going back to school or looking for a better J.O.B. That would be the greatest mistake any one will ever make.

Take this J.O.B. and Shove It

I'm definitely biased when it comes to this review. Over eight years ago, I decided to walk away from my 9 to 5 job and do my own thing.

What attracted me to Ejeke's book is his excellent overview of why people no longer need jobs in modern society. The first part of this book details all the reasons why it makes no sense for many people to work for someone else. I like his comment about how we're not rewarded, no matter how hard we work and how many hours we put in. So true!

Ejeke then moves on to describing a variety of ways you can earn money besides having a job. I was already aware of all the techniques he discusses, but I think he did an excellent job of providing an introduction to some of the common ways people make money online.

Time to leave the rat race behind!

There's an old saying that goes something like, "The winner of the rat race is still just a rat in a race!" OK, I'm paraphrasing, but the mantra is one I've embraced for years now. I'm making great strides in making this mantra a reality in my own life, so I'm researching as much as I can on the subject of financial freedom. This book does a very fine job of addressing this issue with some pretty tangible strategies and freedom mindset scenarios. I really enjoyed perusing this Kindle book...!

I was a bit hesitant purchasing this book based on some negative reviews, but taking a “look inside” convinced me to shell out the $2.99 and purchase it.
Granted – there are spelling mistakes, but not really that many and they do not deter from the content of this book. Perhaps those nit pickers who feel that they paid too much for this book without it being absolutely 100% perfect can go back to their J.O.B.’s as they completely missed the point of this book.
This was truly inspirational to me. I’ve been very dissatisfied with my J.O.B. and really want to turn a lifelong passion into income. I just didn’t know how. Now I know! And I’ll get to work on this immediately.
I am no fool. I know this will take time, but I finally see a path to get there. Very well written book!

Highlight: The Top 100 songs of each year!

Fred Bronson is a chart trivia columnist for Billboard magazine and his love of the charts shines through in this book. It consists primarlity of lists of songs from the Billboard Hot 100, either by artists, producer, label, year or topic. So you get the top 100 Beatles songs, the top 100 Motown songs, the top 25 songs written by Diane Warren, the top 100 songs of 1979, etc.
It keeps the biggest for last: a 5000 song chart of the biggest hits of all time.
The only problem is that all lists are based on equally weighted weeks from the history of chart music. So the 50's (where songs were fewer and chart life longer), and the 90's (where singles were largely abandoned and those that were releases remained on the charts for over a year) tend to dominate many of these lists.
More than half the top 100 of all time are from 55-57 or the 90's. Is 'A Blossom Fell' by Nat King Cole really a bigger hit than Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"? It is here. In fact, with the fast turnover of hits in the 60's only "Hey Jude" makes the top 100. Pity there wasn't some way to balance this info, possibly by factoring in Top 40 listener stats or total singles sales by year as a way to adjust for historical imbalances.
The saving grace of the book is the Charts by Year section. Here the songs have an even playing field, so you can compare songs like "Love Will Keep Us Together" with "Jive Talkin" in 1975, or "Sunshine Superman" and "Hanky Panky" in '66, or "Wind Beneath My Wings" to "Love Shack" in '89.
If you want more specific info on a song, you should also check out Fred's Billboard Book of Number One Singles, a treasure trove of musical trivia.

Great Book, Interesting Subject

I originally had very little knowledge on the subject and only purchased the book because it was associated with the course i entered late. The material is well covered, and given in a manner that it is not overwhelming, yet still concise. I would recommend this book and one of the Author whom teachers at FAU at the time of this writing.
