About the Author
Andrew Arden QC is a full-time practitioner and head of Arden Chambers, London. He is a pioneer of housing (and homelessness) law, and has acted in many of the leading cases in addition to his writing. He is the general editor of the Housing Encyclopaedia, the Housing Law Reports and the Journal of Housing Law, as well as co-author of Arden and Partington's Housing Law, the Manual of Housing Law, Local Government Finance Law and Local Government Constitutional and Administrative Law (all Sweet & Maxwell). Emily Orme is a barrister at Arden Chambers who undertakes both court and advisory work in the areas of housing, business tenancies, administrative and local government law. She has contributed articles to a number of publications including New Law Journal and Journal of Housing Law. Toby Vanhegan is a barrister at Arden Chambers who covers all areas of housing law, with special expertise in immigration and asylum law and the eligibility of immigrants and asylum-seekers for housing and other forms of social assistance.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936) was an English writer. He wrote on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, and allegories—first carefully turning them inside out.

Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both progressivism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. I love his writings and was trying to find a good deal on some. Imagine my delight to see 34 books for my Kindle (where they can be stored so efficiently!)!! I am alternating between fiction and non-fiction selections and loving it.

I downloaded this to read Chesterton's literary biography of Dickens. That book is one of the most brilliant and humane works of criticism in the English language, and a cherished discovery. But Chesterton's style is so simple, witty and makes such genius use of paradox that I found myself, night after night, reading more and unwilling to leave the company of a man who opposed the forces of modernism as materialistic and instrumental -- in a way we have come agree with. A pre-postmodernist- he saw infinite variety and paradox in life and celebrated it.

Witty, Wise and Well-formatted

This is a great collection of GKC's essays, Father Brown stories and novels. I'd start with the novels first: The Man Who Was Thursday, The Ball and the Cross, The Napoleon of Notting Hill. Then try Orthodoxy. The Everlasting Man, one of the best critiques of popular anthropology, is NOT here. But for two bucks ...

Chesterton is opinionated, but he comes from an era when having an opinion was not a complete social faux pax. He was life-long friends with those with whom he vehemently disagreed, including H. G. Wells and Shaw (the latter held a popular series of good-natured yet serious debates with Chesterton. Once you get used to hearing an actual opinion and evaluating it for yourself, you'll enjoy GKC's humor and keen observations on everything from lying in bed to capitalism.

A HISTORICAL PORTRAIT OF THE NOTION OF A "HIERARCHICAL ORDER" OF NATURE

Arthur Oncken Lovejoy (1873-1962) was an influential American philosopher and intellectual historian, who founded the discipline known as the history of ideas. This book comprises the William James Lectures delivered at Harvard University in 1933. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 382-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in the Preface, "The title of this book... was long one of the most famous in the vocabulary of occidental philosophy, science, and reflective poetry; and the conception which in modern times came to be expressed by this ... has been one of the half-dozen most potent and persistent presuppositions in Western thought. It was, in fact, until not much more than a century ago, probably the most widely used familiar conception of the general SCHEME of things, of the constitutive pattern of the universe... The real oddity, then, is that its history has not previously been written and its meaning and implications analyzed... this idea... provided the chief basis for most of the more serious attempts to solve the problem of evil and to show that the scheme of things is an intelligible and rational one; and... [the] same belief about the structure of nature lay in the background of much early modern science..."

He states in the first chapter, "While the history of ideas... is thus an attempt at historical synthesis, this does not mean that it is a mere conglomerate, still less that it aspires to be a comprehensive unification, of other historical disciplines. It is concerned only with a certain group of factors in history, and with these only in so far as they can be seen at work in what are commonly considered separate divisions of the intellectual world; and it is especially interested in the processes by which influences pass over from one province to another." (Pg. 16)

He explains, "This vague notion of an ontological scale was to be combined with the more intelligible conceptions of zoological and psychological hierarchies which Aristotle had suggested... The result was the conception of the plan an structure of the world which, through the Middle Ages and down to the late eighteenth century, many philosophers, most men of science, and, indeed, most educated men, were to accept without question---the conception of the universe as a 'Great Chain of Being,' composed of an immense ... number of links ranging in hierarchical order from the meagerest kind of existents.. through 'every possible' grade up to the ... highest possible kind of creature, between which and the Absolute Being the disparity was assumed to be infinite---every one of them differing from that immediately above and that immediately below it by the 'least possible' degree of difference." (Pg. 59)

Later, he says that the "essence of the cosmological Chain of Being" was "The notion of infinitesimal gradation." (Pg. 90) He says, "it is not mere quantity of numbers that Nature is thus insatiably avid; it is essentially the maximization of diversity that she seeks, the multiplication of species and sub-species and differing individuals to the limit of logical possibility." (Pg. 182) The cosmological version of the theory "tended chiefly... to make man not unbecomingly sensible of his littleness in the scheme of things, and to promote a not wholly unsalutary modesty and self-distrust." (Pg. 200)

If You Are Successful, And Unhappy, Read This Book!

This is a humorous, yet uplifting story about what's really important in our lives. Don Moore, (a former lawyer) takes us through that fatefull day on November 20, 2010 when he woke up with chest pains and a strange sensation in his left arm. He casually drove himself to the hospital to find his heart's left main artery had a 99% blockage, something most people don't survive. Amazingly, he did, and lived to tell about it in a humerous, yet compelling way. Only after an emergency quintuple bypass surgery did he realize the healing of the heart was just the beginning of a journey that celebrates life, love, gratitude, and compassion.

This is a great read with simple, yet effective lessons in recognizing what is really important in life, and how to make expressions of love part of everyday life. Check out his web site; [...]

Going through by pass surgery is enough for any one person to take but to share the experience, learn from it and find humor in the situation is a unique quality that Don Moore seems to possess. Great insight into what surrounds the word "love" and a wonderful read to pass on to others you care for.

Love is a Verb is the story of Moore's gradual and then sudden transformation from the life he felt he was "supposed" to live, to the life he always wanted to live.

The essence of the messages that changed Moore's life: "The only way to heal yourself and, ultimately, the world at large, is to live a life fueled by the power of love - love of self and love of others." In addition to his own compelling story, Love is a Verb offers inspiration, instructions and reminders to guide readers along the pathway. One example: When I'm in a place of self-love, I know the rain will soak my clothes, but never penetrate my skin.

Good mix of humor and seriousness, personal stories and guiding light. Lessons for all of us.

About the Author

James Fenimore Cooper was a nineteenth-century American author and political critic. Esteemed by many for his Romantic style, Cooper became popular for his depiction of Native Americans in fiction. Before Cooper considered himself a writer, he was expelled from Yale University, served as a midshipman for the United States Navy, and became a gentleman farmer. Cooper wrote many notable works including The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, and The Red Rover, which was adapted and performed on stage in 1828. Cooper passed away in 1851 at the age of 61.
