About the Author

Caitlin O’Connell, Ph.D., has passionately devoted the last nineteen years of her research career to the study of elephants. She is the author of the internationally acclaimed Elephant’s Secret Sense, as well as a photography book, An Elephant’s Life. She is a faculty member in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in the Stanford School of Medicine and teaches science writing for Stanford University and the New York Times. When she’s not studying elephants, Caitlin is running the nonprofit organization Utopia Scientific (www.utopiascientific.org) and coauthoring her first YA science-fantasy novel with her husband, Timothy Rodwell. Caitlin lives in San Diego with her husband and their dog, Frodo.

Donna M. Jackson is an award-winning author of many science books for young readers. Her works include the critically acclaimed Elephant Scientists, Bone Detectives, Bug Scientists, and Wildlife Detectives—all honored by the NSTA/CBC’s Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children award; ER Vets, an Orbis Pictus and ASPCA Henry Bergh honor book; and Extreme Scientists, named a Smithsonian Notable Book for Children, 2009. Donna was inspired to write this book on Caitlin’s work after reading about the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunamis and how elephants may be able to sense shockwaves before such catastrophes. Donna lives in Colorado with her husband, Charlie, and their family.

The photographers Caitlin O’Connell, Ph.D., and Timothy Rodwell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., are scientists and professional photographers that have blended art and science to help make science more accessible and engaging. This is a mesmerizing story of how Caitlin O'Connell learned just how elephants communicate with one another ...

Caitlin O'Connell was one of those children who loved animals and enjoyed watching them. Although she could have easily observed the behaviors of her goat and its two kids, Caitlin was more captivated by frogs. When it came time to head off to college, she had considered premed, but the natural world was on her mind. She later claimed "While I was fascinated by medicine, I was more interested in animal behavior and the world of field biology." Caitlin was going to be an etymologist. Her unusual interest in the planthopper and its communication patterns would lead her to discover something amazing about elephants.

As luck would have it, Caitlin was offered the opportunity to study elephants in their natural habitat. She would be living and working in Africa, but little did she know the importance that time would offer us in our understanding of these magnificent animals. It all began when she, and her future husband, Dr. Tim Rodwell, were offered "a three-year job studying elephant movements, habitat, behavior, an interactions with people." In Caprivi, Namibia people were having problems with the elephants. Caitlin later remarked, "they'll eat a whole year's worth of a family's food in a single night." It was becoming an urgent situation.

The scientists were at a loss when they first began studying the elephants because they didn't know quite where to begin. Something had to be done because people needed their crops, but elephants needed to roam and to eat. The battle was ongoing and it wasn't a pleasant one, especially when the farmers retaliated. Caitlin, who had studied how insects and animals communicate, decided to approach it from that standpoint. Just how did they communicate and could she somehow "tell" them to keep away from those crops? One day as she watched "the huge mammals stopping in their tracks and leaning forward on their front feet," she had a thought. Could they actually listen and talk through their feet and how could she prove it?

This is a mesmerizing story of how Caitlin O'Connell learned just how elephants communicate with one another. Not unlike many other scientists, part of her discovery came from luck, but also from applying her innate skills to her work. This gifted scientist makes the world of elephants come alive in this book, alive like no other children's book has done in this realm. The layout is superb with it stunning photography of the elephants. For example, one illustrates how an adolescent bull bonds with an adult one. The dialogue shifts back and forth between Caitlin's amazing discoveries to one that tells us what elephants are all about. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary (Pachyderm Terms), source notes, and additional recommended book, DVD, and website resources to explore. This is a Junior Library Guild Selection, a definite must have for your shelves!

Life as an Elephant

I was unsure if I was going to be interested or focused when reading this book. The complete opposite came to life when I opened it and did a book walk. The photos in the book are so vivid, clear, and beautiful to look at that I found myself bringing the book closer to see everything about it. O'Connell and Rodwell took amazing pictures allowing one to imagine themselves next to the photographers. I found myself looking at the detail of many pictures especially of the elephant skin and would have never known the importance of all their wrinkles. Unlike many people who try to get rid of wrinkles, I'm sure elephants hope for more. This book discusses how they settle into a new area to showing that elephants do have good memory.

Not only is this book very informative of how an elephant lives but also demonstrates the research process to learn more about this interesting mammal. This is a perfect book to add to a library when both learning the process of researching a topic and learning about lives of animals such as elephants. Authors O'Connell and Jackson did an outstanding job in keeping the readers engaged throughout the book with their details and learned knowledge.

I liked the layout of the book which can be easily read and understood by many if not most children who are fluent readers. The authors included a glossary (Pachyderm terms) to help children with words that may not have been understood. As I have already mentioned, this is a great book to keep in one's home or school library especially when learning about this interesting animal.

a must read on elephants

The Elephant Scientist is a great book foretelling much information on elephants and their habitat. The authors Caitlin O'Connell and Donna M. Jackson did a wonderful job providing information about elephants in Namibia, Africa. Let's not forget Timothy Rodwell and Caitlin herself who captured wonderful pictures of these amazing mammals. The photos made it seem as if you were actually there and have an alive-like kind of feature. I, myself have learned some new information and terminology about elephants. This would be a great book for people who are fascinated by elephants and a must have for educators to keep. This would go great to follow up on a lesson, starting a new one, or simply just in the library center. I love the fact how this book includes glossary terms that way in case you didn't understand a word in the text you can look it up in the back. It also included source notes which can be very helpful as well. Overall, it was an informative book that captures readers to learn about elephants.

The books are part of an 8 volume serial. Basically one book split up into 8 parts. Normally I avoid serials entirely, but part 1 was free and I've heard some great things about Roni Loren's books. Wow, was I glad I picked up part 1! Not Until You will forever be one of my all-time favorite books and Roni Loren has landed on my top 5 list of one-click authors!

Cela Medina is as straight-arrow as they come. The straight-A student, perfectionist that always chose school and studying over friends and parties. But now she's graduated from college and is about to move back home and start her life under the watchful eye of her family. So when she sees her super hot neighbors, Foster and Pike on the night of her graduation she thinks why the hell not. Judging by the noises she's heard through the thin walls of her apartment and the women the two men share, it should be the kind of wild night she deserves.

But she soon learns that Foster is a member of the exclusive BDSM resort, The Ranch, and he's not looking for a fling or a one-night stand. He wants a woman that will stick around and surrender to him. To be his submissive.

Now here's why I loved Roni Loren's writing. Her style was so superbly written, that for someone like me who will never understand the lifestyle could get sucked into the story and feel as if I did. Roni pulled me in so deep that I was experiencing Cela's desire to be with Foster and his dark yet exciting ways. Now, this isn't the first time an author has done this for me. But we're talking about subjects that are way beyond my comprehension. What really made Roni's writing stand out was the way the characters expressed their feelings and actions. Every word and scene was in there for a reason, not like so many books I've read that made me wonder… why do I need to know this? Or worse, why is the author repeating it yet again? The writing was organic and flowed nicely.

And I especially loved how each character overcame something in the story. In my opinion, this is a must for a good book. They should learn something or get passed something from their past that will make them a better person. The kind of person the love of their life deserves. It just makes me as a reader feel like now, finally, they can have their happily ever after.

Cela's moment had me tearing up. But Foster's! Oh, my God, I cried like a baby. Interested? Read the books!

Ménage… BDSM… not my thing. But Roni Loren can write about anything and I'll read it!

So why not 5 out of 5? There were some minor editorial issues. Each of the volumes had something in it. Switching from first person to third within a sentence. (Celea's POV was written in first and Foster's was in third.) And some missing words here and there.

"Not Until You Beg" is Part 5 of the serial, `Not Until You' that explores Cela Medina's introduction to the world of BDSM through her complicated relationship with Dominant Ian Foster. Just as Pike is working out the parameters with his new dog, Cela and Foster are trying to figure out where their relationship is going. Cela forces the issue by involving her brother but subsequent events result in a radical change in her life.

This serial combines a very sensual story with an emotional journey that follows one young woman as she works out her professional and personal limits. The common issues of coping with family expectations and finding a compromise in a relationship with a new (albeit kinky) lover makes this a very relevant story that enthrall the reader. An excellent addition to the series.

I love that Foster can read Cela so well and he understands her needs. Cela's an over thinker and she starts to panic when she does that. Foster knows how to get her out of that zone and where he wants her.

Cela panics over any little thing when she starts to analyze and think. She doesn't want anyone to dominate her outside of the bedroom because her father has been dictating her life forever. She doesn't see the difference between her dad and Foster at times. Foster wants to keep her safe and her father wants to dictate what Cela should do, where she should live and probably who she should marry.

Loved the interaction between Andre and his sister and how he told her about the Ranch. Loved restaurant scene, got so caught up in it I wanted to scream when it ended there. Can't wait for the next part.

The is an excellent book by Paul Ferrini, The Gospel according to Jesus. Jesus teaching is to fill human beings with love, and not fear.
Love and fear are opposites. This teaching validates that we can not love unconditionally when we are full of fear. Love and fear are part of our five basic emotions which are: Grief, Envy, Fear, Hate and Love. From these five basic emotions is the beginning and end of all of our human emotions. Jesus teaching further validates that if we are not able to love unconditionally, our hope of transcending the polarity opposites between love and fear and becoming one with God again is a hopeless endeavor. In spirituality their is no duality. The best example I can give of opposite polarities, becoming one is in the automobile battery. When we turn the ignition key positive and negative energy becomes one and the automobiles starts and can go forward or backward, slow or fast. I highly recommend this book to all denomination of religious entities, and my fellow human beings. From my perspective one an individual reads this book he/she will have a much better understanding of ones self. We human might feel grand at time, but we are very vulnerable, and are only specks of dust under the rays of the sun. In the book of job it states: man born of woman is of few days and full of troubles, he springs up like a flower and withers away like a fleeting shadow. He does not endure! Lets us learn to love ourselves, and we an love our fellow human beings. Try this book! You have nothing to lose, but mush to gain.

This book resonates with me. If you cannot understand traditional Christianity (Churchianity), get this book. My favorite for getting free from fear, worry, judgementalism, etc. Be good to yourself, follow your intuition.

Frustrating! but still...

Be aware - when reading the reviews for the books (individually) the titles seemed to be mixed up. Meaning you will find reviews for one book listed under its proper title AND under the wrong titles.

The first two books were very enjoyable.
The third, while the story was good, overall, the editing/ proof-reading must have been skipped. There were story issues that irritated me. For instance the lead male passes out from blood loss and is helpless, yet he keeps waking up to crack jokes, get an erection and feel up the lead female?! And while he is passed out and bleeding the lead female stops to get randy and rub him down?!
As for the forth book... I am TRYING to read it, but have not made it far in to it. Again, it seems as if proof-reading was skipped, and the lead female has gone from crude, violent and disgusting to innocent angel in one stroke.
The story jumps two, then three weeks in one paragraph, but the male lead talks about an event that happened before the time jump and says it happened "last night".

EDIT: I have since finished reading the fourth book. Fortunately, it got easier to read and better in content. The editing is still lacking but I am glad I read it and am not disappointed at having paid to do so.

The degree of carelessness, incongruity and heavy handedness is frustrating, in the third book, because this author can and has done better. It feels like a bait and switch. You get a great free book, well edited, then you - optimistically - buy others only to find them to be poorly edited, poorly thought out, and carelessly writen.

Pity. Still, all in all... I enjoyed the stories, just frustrated by the carelessness.

A romance loveset.

I enjoyed this set of books. I was captured from beginning to end. And what a deal for them all. The Rogues will keep you hypnotized and in love with each of their stories. I highly recommend this boxed set. If you enjoy romances this is the one to read. It allows you to follow the characters till the end.

Better and better!

This was a great series. The twists and turns kept me wanting more and more with each chapter. Each heroine and heroes comes alive. I am actually hoping that there are more books in the series. I am grateful to Cynthia Wright for turning me on to this author.
