Awesome Series!!

This series is awesome!! Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. The richness and depth of the characters drive the story. They get into your mind and under your skin, and you get lost in the plot as it unfolds. This thrilling plot involves romance, love and suspense and magic. 'In the blood' continues to transport you to another world - one so richly created in 'The Den' - and it does not disappoint! It's exciting to come across a trilogy like this. Definitely a page turner. I loved the first book, and can't wait to read the third. I'm still thinking about the characters even after I've finished the book!

In this context, innovations are considered to play a crucial role in stimulating firms’ performance. This book investigates this general hypothesis by looking at three topics: 1. Does innovation lead to an increase in employment growth? 2. Does innovation boost labour productivity? 3. Does innovation in one period improve innovation performance in subsequent periods? Based on a comprehensive innovation panel dataset for German firms, this book presents detailed results for each question, in particular by separating the effects induced by new products from those induced by the introduction of new production technologies. From a theoretical point of view, amongst others, a new multi-product model has been developed to study employment effects.

His television show, Fish on Friday, is a hit and Cyd's posh catering company, Food Glorious Food, is thriving. However, Harry is not the only one starting again. His ex-wife Gina has also remarried. Her partner Richard (who must be the only thirtysomething male on the planet who hates Star Wars) is Pat's "new father." When the couple announce they are moving to America--taking Pat with them--Harry reacts, in time-honored fashion, by attacking Richard. Separated from his son by the Atlantic and struggling as Peggy's stepfather, Harry begins to yearn for a good, old-fashioned "normal, family life"--the kind his lovely old mum and dear departed dad enjoyed. Parsons is the author of Man and Boy, a sentimental tale of a savvy London TV producer learning to come to terms with his small son after a divorce. That book was a runaway success in the author's native land and scored a large paperback sale in the U.S.; now Parsons has a new American publisher. He does not, however, have a very new story to tell, and as the title indicates, this is essentially a sequel. Harry Silver is remarried to upwardly mobile caterer Cyd, who also has a child, Peggy, by a previous marriage. It is hard enough for Harry to make friends with Peggy and cope with a wife whose work keeps her out of the house a lot, but he must also keep in touch with his son, Pat, whom former wife Gina is whisking off to the States with her new husband. There are a lot of rather formulaic situations here, and Parsons is determined to milk every situation for a possible tear or two, including Harry's ill-advised romance with a lovely Japanese photographer. What prevents the book from dissolving into pure mush is Parsons's eye for the humor in awkward situations-the supermarket scene in which Peggy blandly makes Harry out to be a child molester is beautifully done-and his nostalgic feeling for an older generation made of sterner stuff: his portrait of Harry's aging mum, battling cancer, is the best part of the book. There's a real writer at work here.

A real relationship book for men

First the bad: This book is a lot like 'Man and Boy' and it does have a lot of plot elements. It is not a long deep look at one day or one relationship.

Now the good: This book is a lot like 'Man and Boy.' It is the most riveting, yet real, book on relationships this 36-year-old divorced guy has ever read.

The relationships between me and my Dad, me and my Mum, and the new 'blended' families of ex- and step- fathers wives and girlfriends. There are some truly wonderful pages. It's a framework to measure yourself with, a metric to begin to ask questions about yourself with. I am never going to take 'The Grand Tour' of teenage lovers turning into newlyweds into babies and boys and retirement together and grand parenting. It is too late for me now. Instead it's Tony Parsons' world of wanting and understanding too late. Emotional guys trying to do right and somehow not getting there yet. The book aims deep inside and hits the target. Somewhere between the heart and the gut.

Such Insight!

I read Man and Boy and was so excited for the next book. True to form, in Man and Wife, Mr. Parsons continued with his insightful documentation of the emotional turmoil he went through during his divorce. I secretly hoped in his second work, he and "Gina" would get back together. This series is so real, I recommended it to a man fighting over custody of his son. It documents with clarity what children of divorce should know about thier parents anguish, making decisions with and without regard to thier children's emotional outcome. It put into words, what causes a man to want to stray and sometimes with horrible outcomes. Such a sensitive author! Bravo!

As much fun to read as its title is to say.

John Vorhaus brings his personable, yet criminal, main character--Radar Hoverlander--back for some schemes-gone-wrong in his new release, The Albuquerque Turkey. Readers met con-man radar and his equally lovable and crooked new girlfriend, Allie, in the series debut, The California Roll. Now the pair is back for their toughest challenge yet: a respectable life as crime-free, upstanding citizens. Easier said than done for these two.

Add in a grifter patriarch, an old nemesis, and a couple of eccentric artsy friends on the make for fame and glory, and pretty soon it's impossible to tell who's double crossing whom.

Radar's a charming, affable narrator and I really enjoyed his quirky supporting cast, both the good guys and the bad. (Probably because much of the time I couldn't be sure of the difference.) Twists in the story are frequent and amusing. This is a great choice for those looking for fast thrills and a break from predictable PG humor.

I almost never laugh out loud while reading, but The Albuquerque Turkey got me more than once. Thumbs up.

This Book is No Turkey

Having found true love with fellow grafter Allie Quinn, Radar Hoverlander has sworn to settle down and go straight. Their last con has netted them more than enough to live comfortably until they figure out just what they want to do now that they've gone straight.

But their plans go crooked when Radar's father reenters his life. He hasn't seen the man in over 20 years, and now Woody is claiming that is life is on the line from a casino manager in Vegas. Since Woody is a con man in his own right, should Radar trust him, or is he being set up?

I picked up the first book in this series since the author is a friend, but I bought the second one because I enjoyed the first. And this book is another wild ride. At times near the end, I felt the plot was a little too complex for its own good, but everything did make sense in the end.

Back from the first book are Radar, Allie, and Radar's friend Mirplo. Early in the book, Mirplo is developing as a modern artist, and parts about his art and whether it was art or just another scam are very funny. All three are very likable characters. The others brought in for this story are just as real, although not all as likable.

The author has a true gift for writing, and there are some very clever turns of phrase here that will definitely make you stop and think. However, he does indulge in his "gift" of creating new words a bit too much at times as well, and in those cases I wish he'd just stick with real words.

Overall, this wild romp is recommended. Sit down and hold on because you never know where the next page is going to take you.

A Bit Of A Guess

I had problems with the voice in THE ALBUQUERQUE TURKEY. It seemed a bit off to me, like my GPS had lost its signal. It took me a bit of time to figure out it related to word choice and some unusual phrases and dialogue. So at various points along the way, I was ready to give it up, and move on to my next read. But I’m glad I stuck with it, and that I punched through the metaphorical brick wall with both fists.

Sure, it was a bit odd, like my friend Snuffy who may have taken one too many sniffs from that superglue container I left out on the kitchen table, but like Snuffy, this novel still had its entertainment value. The plot may have seemed a bit convoluted and possibly a bit coincidental until the story truly found its direction. But the jokes were there, and so was the entertainment value, and so was the group of pranksters that staggered across the page. For starters, there was the cross-dressing absentee father figure, the nude model with the fair skin and feminine charms, the slaphappy artist with a slightly questionable work ethic and talent, and that’s just in the first half of the story.

It was always a bit of a guess as to what would happen next, so if you like being turned upside down and shaken around a bit, then this novel might hold as much promise as spiked Kool-Aid. If not, then you may want to skip out on this circus, and build your own big top in the backyard. And if that’s not enough, I’m sure you can round up a few barnyard animals to help the festivities run a little more smoothly. So to sum up, there was certainly promise, but it may have failed a bit in the execution.

Average Ghost Stories

If you like ghost stories, you'll enjoy this book. The stories were well-written, reading almost more like fiction than non-fiction. However, I'm the sort of person who likes facts, and these stories struck me as more speculative than anything else. I enjoyed them for the most part, but felt a bit let down by the lack of solid evidence presented to back them up.

More sad than scary, but definitely an entertaining read around Halloween. This would be a very good book for younger readers.

If was just -okay-. Writing redundant, and so highly speculative. Could have done better with out the present tense portions of the book. Would be a cute romantic gift for Halloween or a macabre valentine gift.

A Perfect Set of Ghostly Tales

Once I started reading, I could not--and did not--put this collection of chilling love stories down until I finished it completely and wished for more! Gonsalves has put together the perfect set of Ghostly Tales that are wonderfully interesting and charmingly morose. I can only hope that this terrific author comes out with Haunted Love: Volume 2!! Please! Until then, I ponder the inevitable and wonder if I will cling to this 'veil of tears' we call Earth for an all encompassing Love.

it is easy to get caught up in the elegance and careful ...

744. Post Reditum ad Quirites by Cicero. This speech Cicero gave to the people of Rome after his return from exile. As with so many other speeches by this man, it is easy to get caught up in the elegance and careful wording and miss where he lands his punches.

He begins:

It was better for those to aim their hatred at me than you and the Republic. Although it would be nice to go through life without trouble, I would not otherwise be able to enjoy your kindness at my return (from exile). And in a way all those things we tend to take for granted, family, friends, festivals now mean more than these ever did.

He praises the efforts of his brother. In the past endangered citizens were supported by friends and powerful family connections and even armies, but I was supported by all of you.

It seems that Cicero is claiming that what people did at large is more impressive than what those accomplished through powerful families.

Cicero gives thanks to Lentulus Spinther, the consul who supported him during his term, Sestius who was tireless in efforts to bring Cicero back, Milo, the same and Pompey who helped get the matter through the Senate. Cicero also singles out Lucius Gellius who may have prevented fraud at the assembly to bring back Cicero.

( Cicero knew full well that Pompey was no friend during and leading up to the exile, but for political reasons saw it better to find a way to draw Pompey closer to himself and work legitimately through the Senate.)

If anyone assumes that I have come back a broken man, that person is sadly mistaken.

(Many assumed that Cicero would go into retirement after a triumphant return from exile.)

Marius never relented, though weighed down with age, in his efforts to regain his position of importance. He took vengeance on his enemy. But we differ in a very important way. He used the force of weapons, I will use my ability to speak.

Cicero then describes the four types who tried to destroy him:

1 Those who were angry that the state was saved by my efforts.
2. Those who pretend to be a friend but betrayed me.
3. Those too lazy to expend the kind of energy I did.
4. Those who sold my safety and the dignity of this state. These of course should have been the guardians of the state and Cicero.

I will go after these one at a time:

By conducting business of the Republic with integrity

About the Author
Laura Lippman (b. 1959) is an author of detective fiction. Born in Atlanta, she was raised in Baltimore. Her father was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and Lippman followed in his footsteps, working at the paper until 2001. She used her journalistic experience as a foundation for her first novel, Baltimore Blues (1997), which introduced her longtime series character, Tess Monaghan, a reporter-turned-private detective. Dynamic, strong-willed, and smart, Tess was one of the early exemplars of a “tart noir” character.  Since Baltimore Blues, Lippman has published ten more titles in the series, as well as standalone books including Every Secret Thing (2003) and Life Sentences (2009). She has won nearly every major award for the genre, including the Edgar, Shamus, and Nero Wolfe prizes. Her husband, David Simon, is also a journalist-turned-crime-writer, best known for creating HBO’s The Wire. Lippman’s most recent book is And When She Was Good (2012).

One of the best in the series

The Book Thing is yet another eBook short in the Bibliomysteries series; a series that I've really come to love. There's nothing like a good short story, and when its subject matter is books, then it's even better.

The author tells us the story of a neighborhood children's bookshop in North Baltimore, where her trademark heroine Tess Monaghan, buys the goods for her daughter, Carla Scout. Tess thinks that it's great that places like this still exist, and she does everything she possibly can to support it.

However noble her actions may be though, the bookshop is in jeopardy, not only because of the competition from the eBook market, but also because someone is stealing many books every now and then, without ever being caught. Tess decides to work the case pro bono, in order to set things right. So she sets shop in the shop, and lies in wait for the perp to show his face.

She doesn't spend all her time there though, so while the tale unfolds, we get to follow her to her everyday walks around the neighborhood, we meet someone who's widely known as the Walking Man, and we learn some things about the pessimist owner and the optimist sales girl of the bookshop.

As the story progresses the plot takes a weird turn that even makes Tess stand still for a moment in utter surprise, as the perp is just someone who's trying to do something right, the wrong way. And he, just like the heroine, has the love of books as his driving force.

If you expect too much action and a deep-seeded mystery in the book at hand, perhaps you'll be disappointed. However if you want to read a well-written story about lonely souls, and not so desperate people, who find refuge in the pages of the books, you'll absolutely love it. This is one of the best volumes in the series. 4.5 stars.

Stealing books

"The Book Thing" is one in a series of stand-alone mystery stories from MysteriousPress.com in which books, bookstores, libraries, or manuscripts play a central role. The Bibliomysteries are short stories, not full length novels.

Expensive illustrated books are disappearing from the children's bookstore in Tess Monaghan's North Baltimore neighborhood. Since Tess wants the store to survive so her daughter will have a place to shop for books, she agrees to investigate despite the owner's inability to pay her. It doesn't take Tess long to discover how the thefts are being committed.

While Tess tries her hand at social work and matchmaking before the story is done, the tale's best moments belong to the thief rather than the private investigator. He is drawn with uncommon understanding and compassion. The thief prompts Tess to think about the lives that books live, they ways they die, and the purposes they serve.

Given the uncertain future of brick-and-mortar bookstores, the story is notable for its condemnation of tacky readers who get free advice from bookstore owners and then download the recommended books into their eReaders from online retailers. The story also has a telling message about parents who burden their kids with their own childhood favorites (potentially killing the child's desire to read) rather than letting their children discover their own treasures. In short, this bibliomystery isn't much of a mystery, but it's a fine examination of the role books play in our lives.

This was a short and sweet story, which I enjoyed; loved the references to "To Kill A Mockingbird".

This was a short and sweet story, which I enjoyed. I'm surprised that Tate wasn't aware of The Book Thing already as it seems to be a well-known institution in Baltimore. As for the debate between e-books and physical books noted in this short story, I was a holdout for a while and didn't buy a Kindle or iPad. But then when I went on vacation to Greece 3 years ago, I decided that I couldn't carry many physical books with me. I wanted to read on the cruise (wonderful to sit in the sun on deck while sailing the Aegean Sea) and on the plane rides, but when it came to choosing between clothes and books, I figured clothes were more essential. That's when I finally broke down and got a Kindle to take on the trip with me. However, I do have physical books as well at home. As for the references to "To Kill a Mockingbird", I actually named my son after Jem because I admired that character ever since I read the book in high school. (But I named my daughter after a Shakespeare character instead of Scout.). Finally, we also have a crazy neighbor who my husband and I call Boo Radley. So now I'm wondering: I never thought I had much in common with Tess, based on the previous books, but maybe I do have more in common with her than I thought.
