He told me one time: "I'm a poet, not a singer."

I became a Dylan fan in the early 60's. While In Junior College and working for the student newspaper, I was assigned the task of interviewing him - without an appointment - when he came to perform in the town where that JC was. I grabbed a tape recorder, sat with some friends to create a short list of questions we thought would be fun for him to respond to - and on the assigned evening, I set out to interview him.

I made it to the security gate where I was summarily turned away. Thinking myself clever, I argued, joked and tried to talk my way in - and failed. So, I sat outside (I had no ticket to the show itself) until it was over - then, some three hours after I first arrived, I recognized Dylan, surrounded by a small army of devotees and sycophants, coming out of the stage door. Bravely, I approached him - tape recorder turned on and microphone in hand - trying to remember just one of the many clever questions my friends and I had concocted. All I could get to come out was, "Hi! I'm from the local J.C. Would you please say something about yourself?" He actually stopped, looked at me (I think) through VERY dark glasses and said, clear as a bell, "I'm a poet - not a singer." I believe this volume demonstrates that rather nicely.

On first hearing me play a Dylan album, my dad, who had never - so far as I know - spent one day on a farm, said "That sounds like a lamb with his gonads caught in a barbed wire fence." Maybe he was right. The beauty of this volume is that it is unfettered with music - either written or sung. Just as the title says, it is "Lyrics".... words .... poems..... stories told in certain rhythm and meter. As such, they read purely - without the attempt to convey them as 'song' or himself as a 'singer.' I read the book from cover to cover and actually use it as a lyric book to create my own versions of the lyrical tales he told that are recorded here.

Some are simple: some complex: some perhaps deliberately confusing, inconsistent and mind-twisting. Others are basic - a few even 'sweet' and naively young. Some angry, some narrative, more than a few visionary. But whatever else they are or are not, they are poems - each and every one of them - and, as such, I believe they stand on their own ... without the music he gave them - mostly, as I understand it, after the fact.

Read this way, as a poetic autobiography, I think those interested - or even enamored- with Bob Dylan and his work, will find this volume to be a real treasure trove of pure expressiveness. It has already achieved a special place - in my library, in front of me while I have a guitar in hand - or simply in my lap, as I read and try to appreciate the purist Dylan we have to remember the times, and perhaps ourselves, with.

Essential for any serious music fan

I'm not a native English speaker (moved to the US 20+ years ago) and one of the annoying things of Bob Dylan albums is that, for whatever reason, they don't come with the lyrics to the songs. I'm a big Dylan fan, and as much as I enjoy listening to the albums, I've always wanted to better understand the lyrics. Well, consider that problem solved with this book.

"Lyrics 1962-2001" is the solution to my problem, a 600 page (hard cover) book, containing the lyrics to all Bob Dylan's songs. The book is arranged album-by-album, and song-by-song within those albums, and contains in addition the words to other songs that were not originally on any album.

Bob Dylan towers over the music scene like few others, and his word-crafting has no equal. This book is essential, not just for Bob Dylan fans, but for any serious music lover. I bought this book from Amazon.com, for a mere $27 (S/H included), 40% off the cover price, one of the best bargains ever. "Strongly recommended" doesn't do justice, this is simply essential.

Shakespeare who?

Are you kidding? This is the modern day Shakespeare, Bob Dylan. This book is a mammoth collection of all of Dylan's songs. Stripped of Dylan's voice, guitar and harmonica, these lyrics show just how great Dylan's poetry is. Even his mediocre songs suffering from bad vocal or musical arrangement show Dylan's wit and genius on every line. A must own for all Dylan and poetry enthusiasts. Also recommended with this book is Christopher Rick's Dylan's Visions of Sin.

Fast, furious and fun, all told in a great teen voice

Robin is going to rob banks, and she might fall in love. She’s fallen out of favor at her rich school because Daddy’s fixed the books and can’t pay the bills. But now...

From the first scene, told in a convincing first-person teen voice, to the last, Robin in the Hood is delightfully tongue in cheek, randomly crazy, and humorously odd. It tells of a teen coming of age, family trust lost long ago, the dawning of love, and the bombing of bad guys with trebuchets and jello pits. But there’s wisdom and mystery hidden under the crazy action, quick-fire dialog, and rapid romance. Creek, though mystically odd, repeatedly retreats to an appropriate distance. Robin, though over-the-top and wild, slowly learns there’s more to love and rejection than quick assumptions. Prayers, though no one is sure who they’re sent to, are answered. And a nicely modern Robin Hood theme slips pleasingly into the space around a hidden lake.

This isn’t the sanitized Robin Hood where rich people never get hurt. Nor is it the overly-socially-conscious sort that agonizes over other poeple’s pain. Rather it’s a quick sharp romp through modern fantasy, blending fairytale, romance, excitement and fun in well-measured portions—a fast, cool, highly recommended read.

Delighful and Imaginative Story!

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Was one of those you look forward to reading when you can finally sit down to relax. D Reed has a way of vividly capturing the spirit of individuals, and her characters have such charm and depth. Her exquisite humor pops up when leat expected! I found myself smiling and then laughing quite frequently. Last but not least, this book is filled with stories about real people and their struggles, but ultimately their connection to each other and its importance becomes quite evident. Gift yourself or someone else with this uplifting book! Great for teens and adults.

fast-paced!

I consider my life pretty mundane, and when I find a book that captures and holds my attention, it is magical! This book did just that. It is well written with believable characters that pull at your heart strings. Robin and Creek may be teen-agers, but their story will appeal to all ages. Diane J. Reed infuses their adventures with humor and wisdom and makes them come alive. I would recommend this book to any one who wants to believe in true love and a little magic!

witty novella but high on language and sexual innuendo

Here are two books you can easily read in one day. I'm willing to bet if you like these sort of books, as soon as you finish the first one you will be so single minded in reading the next one you will forget children and small animals. Eating and sleeping will be become unnecessary and work?! Ha, don't make me laugh. There is no work when reading these books.

Honestly though, these are short reads, novellas really. They are essentially the same story told from two different points of view. The first book, Play With Me, is told from Liza's point of view. The second book, Ryan Hunter is told from Ryan's point of view. (bet you couldn't guess that by the title.)

I thought it was brilliant to work the story this way. I love when we get to glimpse inside the head of more than one character. Especially when the characters are well developed with strong voices of their own. The girl/boy POV was entertaining. Piper Shelly really captured the differences between the opposite sexes. There's just something about reliving a smokin' scene in a whole new way. :)

Having said that, I was a bit disturbed by the language. There was so much of it. I just hate seeing the F word in YA. Well, I hate seeing it anywhere, but especially in books that kids might be reading. I just think there are smarter ways to write expressions and feelings. Way too much language for me. Just a person preference and one I realize is not shared by everyone.

There is also a lot of sexual innuendo and sexual talk. I realize that YA covers a broad age range but this is not a book I would put into the hands of my 15 year old daughter. I would say this is more an upper YA novel. 18+ There is underage drinking facilitated by parents and other adults, which, I might add, is against the law. Yes. Very against the law.

These books are witty, engaging and very hard to put down. My thanks to the author and RABT for allowing me to be a part of this tour.

A quick fun read

In this novella, sixteen-year-old Liza is so focused on her childhood crush that she's spends her entire life dreaming of her best friend Tony returning her feelings when the impossible happens and he falls for another girl. She's prepared to pull out all stakes to get him back and almost misses what's right in front of her.
The gorgeous, Ryan Hunter...
Okay, to say any more would ruin the story, but get the book and see how it ends. The dynamics between H/h are funny and sweet.
Ryan Hunter is one yummy hero:) And the scene with the lemon--phew hot for a YA, but so fitting. Loved it.
Another great book by Piper Shelly. It will glue you to your seat until the very the end.

First off I want to say that I absolutely loved this novella. It was an easy read and I never felt bored at all. It made me feel like a teenager all over again. Piper did a wonderful job and I look forward to reading more of her works.

The story starts off with Liza awaiting her best friend to come home from soccer camp. She is very much in love with her best friend, Tony. They are neighbors and have been inseparable since kindergarten. Liza even fantasizes about her name with his last name. So cute!! He finally gets home but Liza soon finds out he is interested in another girl. She ends up joining the soccer team to spend more time with Tony since the captain of the team is taking away her valuable time with her best friend. It started off great, she made the team! But why? She has never played soccer before; she always was on the sidelines watching, Tony. All the sudden Liza was asked to go to Ryan Hunter's house, he threw the biggest parties but they were always invite only parties and frankly Liza never was invited. Tony ended up taking her to the party only to leave her to fend for herself while he was off with Chloe, the new girl. Liza finds herself being perused if you will by Ryan and ends up waking the next morning next to him in his bed. Whew, I literally loved this moment! The fact that Liza started to have a liking to Ryan made Tony quite jealous, and the fact that Tony was Liza's best friend made Ryan quite jealous as well. Who will Liza end up with?

In all, this novella was amazing and I am looking forward to reading more like it. Like I said before it was an easy read, very cute. I would say it's more for the older young adult crowd only because of the sexual innuendos. It definitely made me feel whatever Liza was feeling whether it is embarrassed or shy, I really love when a book can give you the chills or make you blush. I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation to what was going to happen next and couldn't stop reading. The ups and downs of this story were spectacular. - Heather

Strong-headed, competent Sybylla has lived her sixteen years in and out of poverty in the Australian outback. She happily remembers her early years, including her mother's concern that she is too much of a tomboy and her father's response that "the curse of her sex will bother her soon enough." When she is ten, Sybylla's life changes drastically as her family moves, her father's businesses fail, and years of drought blight their land: "We felt the full force of the heavy hand of poverty...the wounded pride and humiliation which attacked us." At fifteen, with no visions of escape from her difficult life, Sybylla is invited to her grandmother's estate and there tastes some of the pleasures she longs for - music, books, art. She also falls in love and feels the joy and sorrow love can bring. Sybylla provides a vivid recollection of youth as she fights the conventions of her time and pays a high price to be true to her heart. Under the pen name Miles Franklin, Stella Marie Sarah Miles Franklin wrote My Brilliant Career at age sixteen. Many readers saw the novel as purely autobiographical, and the negative reaction to her portrayal of people in the outback made her stop further publication of the book. A classic story of pioneer life and young womanhood

This book is a bit like a grown-up Little House in the Prairie but set in 19th century outback Australia rather than the Wild West of the US.
This is a story of a young, spirited woman who rebels against convention and the desire of her relatives that she marry the wealthy, and (it has to be said) highly desirable, local squatter (swoon! swoon!). Unlike Laura Ingalls, Sybilla chooses the road less travelled and refuses to marry. She follows her dreams instead.
What makes this book so remarkable is that it was written 100 years ago yet the voice of the narrator is so fresh. The book is funny and inspiring. I first read it when I was a teenager and my love for it has never diminished. If you cannot read the novel, try to see the film with Judy Davis and Sam Neill which brings the book wonderfully to life. The movie is as much of an Australian classic as the book.

This Brilliant Book

These books are not really meant to go together. When she was sixteen years old, Miles Franklin wrote My Brilliant Career, A NOVEL, but was plagued for years by people who believed that this book was an autobiography. Some people continued to insist it was, or even misrepresent it as such even after being personally informed by Miles Franklin that the book was a novel. Finally, Miles Franklin withdrew My Brilliant Career from publication, and in the fifties, wrote My Career Goes Bung as a response to those who continued to believe that My Brilliant Career was an autobiography. My Career Goes Bung is a parody of the literary world, not a sequel to My Brilliant Career, and frankly, if you read it immediately after, it will probably spoil the magic of My Brilliant Career for you.
That said, here is my review of My Brilliant Career:
The is a beautiful and startling book. Written by Miles Franklin in 1901, when she was just sixteen, it is the story of a young girl, Sybylla Melvyn, trying to live her own life in Possum Gully, Australia. She doesn't want to marry, and repeat her mother's life. She'd like to travel, but she has no money. She's bright, but her prospects for college are non-existent. More than anything, she would like to be an artist, but not because she has a passion for any particular artistic expression; she just likes her imagined idea of an artist's lifestyle.
She has a brief respite when she goes to live with her grandmother, and meets Harold Beecham, who becomes her best friend. She also gets to know her Aunt Helen, "neither maid, nor widow, nor wife," who cautions her of the dangers of marrying for love. Sybylla wonders why she should marry at all. If she had a fortune, she declares, she would give it gladly to someone she loved, but "the word wife finished [her] up."
Life has tougher things in store for Sybylla, but she is a survivor, and she begins to write. She masters metaphor: "If the souls of our lives were voiced in music, there are some that none but a great organ could express, others the clash of a full orchestra, a few...the...exquisite sadness of a violin..., and mine could be told with a couple of nails in a rusty tin pot."
Maybe she writes because of what she knows, or maybe she has insight because she writes, but Sybylla, from Possum Gully, to genteel Caddagat and Five-Bob Downs, to the muddy M'Swat farm, and back to Possum Gully, knows classism, demagoguery, democracy, socialism, feminism, and cynicism.
Sybylla is a joy to know. I can't recommend this book more.

astonishing book

I'm not exactly sure, but I think that MF wrote this book when she was still fairly young (16 or 17), and it sends shivers down my spine to think of a young girl with such energy and pride so long ago. This is a story about a girl in Australia end of the 19th century, and what happens to her when she visits other families and places and the decisions she makes. Some of the decisions she makes seem to be fairly self-destructive, and it's interesting to think about why she made them - too young to know better, too scared, not able to compromise. The heroine is a very strong character, flawed but understandable. I really, really like this book (incidentally, my ex-boyfriend found it almost unreadable). I think of it as relating to feminism; but that's just my bias. It's actually just a good yarn.
Hmm. Australian women have their own history. Is this interesting to anyone other than myself?

About the Author
Gautam Shroff heads TCS' Innovation Lab in Delhi, a corporate R&D lab that conducts applied research in software architecture, natural language processing, data mining, multimedia, graphics and computer vision. Additionally he is responsible for TCS' Global Co-Innovation Network (COIN) which works with venture backed emerging technology companies to create and take to market solutions that have disruptive innovation potential. Further, as a member of TCS' Corporate Technology Board, he is part of the process of recommending directions to existing R&D efforts, spawning new R&D efforts, sponsoring external research, and proliferating the resulting technology and intellectual property across TCS' businesses.

Great coverage of the fundamentals of cloud computing

The book does a great job covering the fundamentals of enterprise computing, including a technical introduction to enterprise architecture. It will of interest to programmers and software architects who are not yet familiar with these topics. I really enjoyed Shroff's coverage of the economics of cloud computing in Chapter 6. He addresses the issue by showing how he compares the in-house (collocation center) vs cloud. Readers can adopt his approach using their own numbers to produce a similar comparison. It is suggested by the publisher that this book could serve as a reference for a graduate-level course in software architecture or software engineering, I agree this would be a good use of the book.
