A huge collection

What the Grimm Brothers did for fairy tales in Germany, Afanas'ev did for Russia. Over the course of his lifetime(1826-1871), he collected countless of these wonderful little stories from common folk, just as the Grimms did. This collection contains stories of adventure and enchantment, animal fables and more. Included are stories of Vasilissa and Baba Yaga, the witch whose house was built on chicken feet, and the famous story of the giant turnip. There's even some stories about vampires. But be prepared, this book is huge! And every bit of it distinctly Russian.

I have owned since 1975 a copy of an earlier, hardcover, Pantheon reprint edition of this superb collection, which was originally published in 1945. I have used it for both light reading and for serious study (while in courses on Baltic and Slavic Folklore and Folktale Studies). The selection and translation of stories both seem first-rate. (For the latter, I have had to rely on the opinions of those who actually read Russian, instead of just having studied it in school.) The accompanying illustrations are properly enchanting -- and only occasionally are placed where they give away the point of the story.

The only real drawback is that it is still merely a selection from about three volumes (depending on the edition you prefer) of "skazki." This is the Russian term for oral tales of marvels, adventures, and misadventures, equivalent to the German "Maerchen." In both cases, the English term "Fairy Tale" is the conventional, but not really adequate, translation. (As usual in large collections, only a handful of tales concern anything like fairies.) One of the requirements for the selection seems to have been that the tales chosen should be acceptable to American parents in the 1940s, but otherwise the considerable variety of the original seems to have been largely preserved. The suggested reader age of "9 to 12" conceals the pleasure that adult readers with interests in folklore or Russian culture will derive from the volume. Fortunately, they may be lead to it by the fine supplementary material at the end, although this is now half a century old.

Afanas'ev (various transliterations) was one of the many nineteenth-century collectors inspired by the Grimms,. By most accounts he was one of the most responsible, even though his practices of recording and documenting texts are hardly up to modern standards. (Neither were those of the Grimms, for that matter.) The main collection from which this was excerpted was the sourcebook for Vladimir Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale," a key work in modern folktale studies, but as Roman Jakobson (yes, the Structural Linguist) points out in his commentary to this collection, the book had already established itself as a gem of Russian literature, an inspiration and resource for poets.

What a fun book!

Fairy tales get us into the psyche of a culture. Americans see themselves as Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appelseed, conquoring the frontier. This book introduces us to the Russian psyche. It shows us how they look at things--the world, society, life, family, and government.
Some of the stroies are charming, such as the fabel of the Turnip and the Honey-pot. Other stories made absolutley no sense. But I had fun trying to crack these weird nuts.
I enjoyed the translation. It is not as energetic as Seamus Heaney, or J. B. Phillipws, but it is readable, athough you realize that you are reading a translation.
C. S. Lewis, in his preface to "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," mentions that as children we read fairy tales, then we outgow them. Then, as adults, we come back to these stories and read them with different eyes. I had that experince with this book.

About the Author

After qualifying in pharmacy and working as a hospital pharmacist, Stephen Goundrey-Smith subsequently studied Information Science at City University, London. He currently manages SGS PharmaSolutions, a specialist consultancy dealing in pharmacy informatics and contract professional communications for the international pharmaceutical industry. He has published a number of papers on clinical and information science issues, including, recently, the first comprehensive review of electronic prescribing system design and experience in the UK. He has also contributed to the recent Connecting for Health consultation on electronic prescribing requirements.

Luis E. Ibáñez is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and member of the Instituto de Física Teórica-UAM/CSIC. One of the world leaders in physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, he has made important contributions to the construction of the supersymmetric Standard Model and superstring phenomenology.

Angel M. Uranga is Research Professor at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas at the Instituto de Física Teórica-UAM/CSIC. He is one of the leading young string theorists working in the construction of models of particle physics, in particular due to his contribution on the use of D-branes to build realistic brane-world models.

Very Quiet War

I persisted through this one because i like to finish what I started. This is a long story about a strange family that never really grabbed me. It wasn't horrible. I just never really got the point. Sometimes the timeline seemed a little off kilter, as well. Not one I'd read again, but not really sorry I read it either.

About the Author

Even though ERICA VETSCH has set aside her career teaching history to high school students in order to homeschool her own children, but her love of history hasn't faded. Erica's favorite books are historical novels and history books, and one of her greatest thrills is stumbling across some obscure historical factoid that makes her imagination leap. She’s continually amazed at how God has allowed her to use her passion for history, romance, and daydreaming to craft historical romances that entertain readers and glorify Him. Whenever she’s not following flights of fancy in her fictional world, Erica is the company bookkeeper for her family’s lumber business, a mother of two, wife to a man who is her total opposite and yet her soul mate, and an avid museum patron.

Heartwarming Historical Romance

In a word, A Bride Sews with Love in Needles, California is wonderful! Erica Vetsch has created compelling characters I cared for from the start. I enjoyed every minute spent with impassioned but impulsive Meghan and brave but burdened Caleb. This well-written story is rich in historical detail and will engage the emotions at every turn. I highly recommend it.

Light and Totally Entertaining!

Meghan Thornson is ecstatic when she secures employment as a Harvey Girl in Needles, California. A good job, earning her own money, greeting and encouraging World War I recruits, gaining her independence; the perfect combination for success . . . .right?

Caleb McBride keeps to himself, rarely visiting town unless he is required to pick up horses or deliver trained horses to the railroad station for transport. His contributions to the war effort are not appreciated by the residents of Needles, many think he is profiting off the war , rather than volunteering his services; in other words they consider him a coward. And Caleb has done nothing to overtly change those opinions.

When beautiful, outspoken Meghan meets handsome, introverted Caleb, the town of Needles, California may never be the same. Enjoy this light, entertaining look at the brave men and women on the home front during this period of American history.

Sweet story with some history

I'm from Needles, California, so when I saw the title of this book I knew I had to try it. It's a pleasant little book about a young girl who moves to the desert to work as a Harvey Girl in the El Garces Hotel in Needles, during the hotel's glory days. The author has done some homework on the area; readers from Needles will be pleased to see references to real people and places in our community's history. Meghan's effort to help support soldiers while struggling to please a demanding boss, and trying not to fall in love with a man everyone says is wrong for her, makes for a fast, enjoyable read.
