These authors understand the complex situation of cyberbullying. This book is an excellent resource which will help school administrators deal logically with cyberbullying incidents. The matrix they developed is simple to use and easily understood. This is a must read for any school administrator who deals with bullying in cyberspace.

A Must Read for All School Leaders

Finally a book that offers school leaders guidance in their decision-making processes around the sensitive issue of cyber bullying. This book shares a solid review of law cases in an interesting and well organized manner. The most important part of the book is something the authors refer to as The MATRIX. This tool and its subsequent rubric give districts a way to develop a common understanding AND a common discipline plan. I would usually only say that I love a book if it were fiction but I can easily state that I love what this book offers me in the performance of my job.

"Responding to Cyber Bullying" is an excellent resource for school administrators and teachers. Too often, schools do not take action to combat cyber-bullying because they are uncertain about what steps to take. This is an excellent guide for understanding the role of schools in addressing these types of problems in a proactive way. The authors combine experience in law, technology, and school administration; bringing a comprehensive approach to this challenging problem. I recommend this reference.

A well-written period romance with a twist

This novel was different to any period romance that I have read before. It is not a regency romance in style, plus it is set in the Victorian era rather than the Regency. It was much more erotic than most period romances, yet the most unique aspect of this novel was the plot itself. It was suspenseful, it was captivating--I couldn't stop turning the pages. It was a brilliant plot.
Ms Brighton is very good at setting the scence and introducing her characters. Her descriptions of the male protagonist, Gideon, truly brought to light his complex and mysterious nature. Although he was obviously an imposing figure, and thought himself a bit of a brute, the author always manages to show an alternate side to Gideon. In many ways he was a man in need of rescue, and what woman can resist when such a powerful and virile man needs her to rescue him? Certainly the lead female, Elizabeth, couldn't.
The relationship between the two is stormily passionate at best and rather harsh at it's worst. However, the two characters overcome their individual issues and realise that they are perfect together. Life has been hard for both of them and it takes them a while to appreciate what they have found. And now that they've found it, neither one of them is going to let anything ruin it. Although there's plenty of people who will try to do just that...
Definitely give this one a read. You won't be disappointed by the plot, plus the eroticism is very well-written and is a nice addition to the novel. It is assuredly a part of the story, rather than being added in for the sake of it. That makes all the difference in my opinion.

A different kind of romantic "hero" but I didn't love him

This is the second book in the author's Seduction Series, that features men who work in Lady Lavender's brothel. I have not read the first one, To Seduce an Earl (The Seduction Series). I think it might help to read that book to get a better idea of how these men were forced to work as male prostitutes. Also, Alex (the hero of that book) is mentioned frequently in this book.

The idea of a male prostitute as a romantic hero is interesting but tricky. Obviously the idea is to show how the love of a woman can change them, but I want to like my romantic heroes enough to cheer for them to have a happy ending with the heroine. Gideon starts out the book so unlikeable, the only reason Elizabeth sticks with him is her desperation. Gideon does undergo a change over the course of the book but even near the end he is not my idea of a romantic hero.

Elizabeth made a promise she felt had to fulfill, but I didn't understand why she otherwise felt so powerless against her enemy. (I won't spoil the plot by saying any more.) She had lots of money -- presumably more than her enemy and should have been able to use her financial security to protect herself.

The ending didn't give me that *zing* of happiness for the characters that is a mark of a great romance. I didn't even get teary-eyed and I'll cry at almost anything.

It is unlikely that I will read any of the rest of this series.

Far less passion than tedious, endless repetition ...

I will shamelessly admit that I do enjoy romance novels - when the author abandons category for characterization and cliche for fresh story and depth. TO CAPTURE A RAKE is billed as a steamy romance novel, but in fact the love (sex) scenes are far apart and separated mostly by tedious and endlessly repetitious pages wherein the male prostitute and the innocent-who-is-not-all-she-seems-to-be yearn for each other separately and cannot communicate at all when they're together. Needless to say, this doesn't give the reader much to excite her.

The idea of a romantic hero being a male prostitute living in a gilded cage is a nice twist on the standard romantic setup, though the author makes it very clear from the beginning that Gideon is no pushover and in fact expects always to dominate his female clients. Of course Elizabeth, our heroine who has her own reasons for needing him in her bed, even though she has to buy his time to get him there, immediately and inadvertently (is it ever any other way in romantic fiction?) exerts a bewitching effect on Gideon, and he on her, though they are not together for more than half a page before someone insults or pushes away the other and they separate - and once they separate, the author makes painfully clear how much they're attracted. Try reading this for 100 pages; it's really tough.

I gave it two stars for the unique setup, which unfortunately is not borne out in the rest of the book. The fact is, almost nothing actually HAPPENS in this novel - and unfortunately, when the first third goes by with almost no plot movement, the rest of the book can't save it. The romantic fiction I do admire is fast-paced, plot heavy, and with a sense that the characters have lives to live and things they have to do, apart from their overwhelming attraction. This gives the reader some grounding, not to mention a reason to keep turning the pages. TO CAPTURE A RAKE is romantic fare with almost no plot, clumsy, cliched prose and even worse, very little romance. Without those, what's there to keep a reader around?

Her former adulterous lover, the charismatic WWI hero and once gubernatorial hopeful Wes Williamson, reappears and persuades Susan to abandon her other students in order to develop the untrained voice of his African-American chauffeur, Monty Rathbun, with an eye to putting him on the professional stage. Because Monty is black, Susan moves the lessons to the seclusion of her family ranch in mountainous Two Medicine country. But overnight prosperity from oil and copper has brought motorcars and telephones, so secrets are not easily kept. Soon, the KKK makes its presence felt, and Susan's home is vandalized. Though Wes quickly routs the bigots, Monty flees, resurfacing in New York during the Harlem Renaissance, where he attains overnight celebrity as a singer of spirituals. Of course, for black men and adulterous lovers in the 1920s, the course of fame and secret passion is still fraught with peril, and more trouble lies in wait for all. Doig returns to several of the characters from his much-loved Dancing at the Rascal Fair (1987) in this gripping story set not only in Montana's Two Medicine country, the landscape indelibly associated with the author, but also in New York during the Harlem Renaissance. It's 1924, and Susan Duff, the headstrong schoolgirl from Rascal Fair, is now a middle-aged voice teacher in Helena, resigned to spinsterhood after her affair with gubernatorial candidate Wes Williamson cost him the election. Then Wes seeks her out with a proposition: teach his black chauffeur, Monty, to sing. Returning to Two Medicine country, Susan does just that, as the narrative twists and turns its way back into the pasts of the three principal characters and ahead into their shared futures in New York: Monty on the concert stage and Susan and Wes, their relationship still tumultuous, in the wings. As always, Doig incorporates a vast amount of fascinating historical material into his personal drama: the story of the "Buffalo soldiers" of the tenth cavalry in the late nineteenth century; the saga of the Ku Klux Klan's incursion into Montana; and, of course, the Harlem Renaissance itself. The heart of the matter, though, is the three-sided relationship among Susan, Wes, and Monty; skirting the melodrama into which this triptych might easily have tumbled, Doig tightens the reins on his sometimes mannered prose and constructs a subtle, highly textured love story, nicely balancing period detail and well-modulated emotion. The full significance of this novel's evocative title does not become clear until the very closing pages, and that's fitting for a melodrama-historical-romance that holds its cards very close to the chest right up to each turn of the plot. There are in fact several narratives and themes that weave in and around each other, and Doig is careful to balance them artfully so that each new development has an element of the unexpected for the reader.
The texture of Doig's narrative style is richly detailed, like tapestry. His characters and the exchanges between them spring strongly to life. You do not speed read for the plot but linger over the nuances of behavior, gesture, verbal inflection, thought, and feeling. Meanwhile, a compelling story is told of a black ranch hand and rodeo clown who is transformed under the guiding hand of a white voice teacher to become a rising star in the music world.
Set in the 1920s, the story also portrays the social forces and prejudices that intrude on their growing relationship. And the reader learns how the KKK reached as far west as Montana with its use of secrecy and intimidation to enforce a code of racial and ethnic discrimination. Just as ugly, though not resorting to hoods and sheets, are those at the very highest social rungs who have their part to play in enforcing racial divisions.
Set primarily in Montana, the book needs to look back only a generation to the immigrant homesteaders of the 1880s, the cavalry posts on the plains, the rise of the cattle barons, and the subduing of the Native Americans. Meanwhile, the trenches of WWI inhabit recent memory. The book captures the breadth of American life from the closing frontier on the one hand to jazz-age New York and the Harlem Renaissance on the other.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the historical West, relationships between strongly independent characters, the African-American experience, singing and voice training, and a richly textured, multi-layered style of storytelling. Doig is a master.

Return to Two Medicine Country

It should come as no surprise to any fan of western literature that Ivan Doig has returned to the necessary soil of Montana to tell his latest story. But that he has combined his familiar landscape and characters with a new twist might cause a pleasant wonder.
In "Prairie Nocturne," the West?s pre-eminent literary novelist rides the wide-open range between Montana and New York City during the Harlem Renaissance, gathering a cast of players for one last inspired grasp at love and celebrity.
In a Faulknerian flourish that has threaded through five of his six previous novels, Doig again populates his seventh with some familiar faces in old settings. What Doig fan would be astonished to find the indomitable Angus McCaskill making more than a cameo appearance in Doig?s newest novel?
And lest any reader think Doig?s beloved landscape has been relegated to a cameo appearance shorter than any McCaskill?s, fear not. No western writer ? and Doig is the prime living model for that species ? can escape the ageless countryside?s effect on either character or author.
Doig?s poetic prose is growing richer and more subtle with each book, like a stone in a river. In "Prairie Nocturne," as the narrative entwines the pasts and presents of its three principal characters, his essential themes re-emerge: family, landscape, childhood memory, loyalty, and the inescapability of our past.
Doig?s characters, new and old, are unforgettable, and not just because he keeps bringing them back to life in subsequent books. He embroiders them with history, myth and sensuality. Combined with the timeless beauty of his own ancestral ground, they are fast becoming as much a part of the American mind-scape as the Snopes family of Yoknapatawpha.

Not his best

I read it over a couple of days and after the first one, I was enthralled. Doig is my favorite author and I love the way he words things so beautifully. But, over the last two days, I felt like I was only reading to get finished. KKK, Harlem Renaissance, the ins-and-outs of singing, and even railroad/land consolidation were just too much. Tell me a story of the West with strong, but flawed characters. Unlike with Angus, Jick, Paul, Morrie, Varrick & Beth, I finished this one not liking, or even really caring about, the characters. I always reread my Doigs; but probably not this one.
