Christopher Fry's original one-acts (plus 'The Firstborn')

For lovers of Christopher Fry, this is not to be missed. Or even, I'd assert, it shouldn't be missed by lovers of theatre, period.

Christopher Fry's works are altogether too little known and little produced. English verse drama had something of a revival in the early to middle 20th century; but Christopher Fry stands head-and-shoulders above the other revivalists, including Eliot. There is nothing musty or antiquarian here. Fry's plays continue the great tradition of English verse drama, with all its fervor, freshness, and wonder unabated. The plays are, at their (frequent) best, volcanic--tumbling tangles of joy and invention, intoxicated by the world, human life, and the English tongue. Nor are modern language and sensibilities ignored or rejected; they are made part of the playfulness; they are embraced and overcome. I may be misunderstood, but the most precise way of describing Fry's plays is this: they are what Shakespeare might have written had he lived in the 20th century.

This volume contains all of his original one-act plays. (There's still no publication of his pantomimes, revues, libretti, radio scripts, or even--in a collection--translations.) These are his more "minor" major works, but they are still excellent. ‘A Phoenix Too Frequent’ and ‘Caedmon Construed’ are two of the finest plays I've ever read. ‘Thor, with Angels’ and ‘A Sleep of Prisoners’ are also quite good (‘Thor’ is more comedic in its seriousness, whereas ‘Sleep’ is almost liturgical, like a modern mystery play). ‘The Boy with a Cart’ has its moments but is clearly an early work. My memory of ‘A Ringing of Bells’ is, honestly, not very clear; but it is his last work and hard to find, and thus worth including here for those reasons alone. Also included is his only tragedy, the three-act ‘Firstborn’; this also is clearly an early work, and its moments are--as I recall--less frequent than those of ‘The Boy with a Cart.’

(‘The Boy with a Cart’ is verse with prose passages; ‘The Firstborn,’ ‘Phoenix,’ ‘Thor,’ and ‘Sleep’ are--I think--entirely verse; ‘Caedmon’ is prose with diegetic verse passages; and ‘Bells’ is entirely prose.)

The publication itself is good: readable type, firm binding, solid paper, etc.

All three volumes of the Oberon Modern Playwrights “Plays of Christopher Fry” are good; though this one--having the greatest number of plays and covering his whole career--is perhaps the best introduction to Fry.

If you like Christopher Fry, poetry, or play scripts (especially verse drama), you should buy this. Every English-speaking theatre program should have a copy in their library.

Softwar is a biography of Larry Ellison and his company, Oracle. As such, it's simultaneously a portrait of a clever and driven man, a case study of a successful software development company, and a tableau of the commercial software industry from its beginnings, through the dot-com craze, and into the present era. Matthew Symonds, who began this project while working as the editor of the excellent technology section of the Economist, has done a great job with all three elements of his project, thanks in no small part to the tremendous access he was given and to his close collaboration with Ellison.

Collaboration is very nearly the right word, as Ellison reviewed Symonds' manuscript before publication and, while he did not alter it, he did make a large number of comments, which appear in the book as footnotes. As Symonds is a good journalist who attributes most of his material, Ellison is able to take issue immediately with statements other people make about him and his company. The overall effect is hypertextual, and represents an important new biographical technique that other writers should imitate. Symonds was technology editor at the Economist when Ellison invited him to collaborate on a book about e-business, but the journalist decided he would rather write a profile of the software tycoon, one of Silicon Valley's most notorious figures. Oracle's database programs have become integral to the Internet and other networked computer systems, and Oracle's head is convinced that he can surpass Microsoft as the industry leader. But he's also developed a reputation for his aggressive corporate tactics and personal flamboyance. Ellison agreed to cooperate with the project, but as part of the deal, he reserved the right to respond, which he does in a series of running footnotes. Sometimes he only uses the opportunity to mouth business platitudes, but he also refutes stories, cracks jokes and even argues with other sources. Although the book deals extensively with Oracle's efforts to promote a new software package, it comes to life most when it follows Ellison outside the office-prepping his sailboat for a run at the America's Cup or overseeing the final touches on a Japanese garden complex. Symonds's near-total access to his subject leads to intimate observations that verge on personal advice, as when the writer suggests how best to handle a top Oracle executive or comments on the relationship between Ellison and his two children. But he remains objective enough to point out several mistakes in the past management of Oracle (many of which Ellison acknowledges or clarifies). Even without its unusual counterpoint, the book would stand as a compelling portrayal of one of the computer industry's most influential leaders.

There has been a war brewing in the software industry that most computer users don't even know about. Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle, wants to supplant the current Windows-based client-server network architecture with a totally Internet-based solution that would simplify computing and make Microsoft's server software obsolete. Even now, Oracle is the dominant software in business; every time you do a Google search or buy something on Amazon.com, you are using it. Anyone who craves a play-by-play account of Ellison and the evolution of the number-one relational database in the world can really sink their teeth into this. Beware if you 're not up on your geekspeak, though, as the casual reader will get lost in all the IT systems acronyms thrown around, such as CRM, ERP, HR and TPC-C. More entertaining than the technical jargon is the ruthless backstabbing that goes on between Ellison and big-name competitors such as Microsoft, Seibel Systems, PeopleSoft and i2 Technologies. If you want to know a lot about Ellison AND Oracle

For years it seems like I've heard about Larry Ellison being the complete antithesis of Bill Gates while at the same time earning almost as much money. Knowing this about him and very little about Oracle, I decided it was time to look into it. "Softwar" appears to blend a few things that I find very desirable into one book.
First, its written by an independent observer-- Matthew Symonds of the Economist. While who can say whether this is truly an unbiased account, the vast majority of the book seems to portray Oracle in good light, but contains quips that allow the reader to see where all the Oracle detractors might have a point.
Second, Larry Ellison. When Symonds writes something or quotes someone (like Tom Siebel or other former employees) and Ellison disagrees, he gets to chime in and tell his side of the story through footnotes. After looking at so many books that just don't seem to have any proximity to Ellison, I chose this book mainly because you can get Ellison's rhetoric straight from the horses's mouth.
Third, if you read this book soon, the information will be more practical than books that seem to focus on interesting, but outdated info about a companies products or strategies. I personally knew nothing of Enterprise software or hardware other than hearing people complain about SAP. Now I at least have a semblence of knowledge about a field I'll probably end up at least working with.
If you want a book that puts Oracle in a good light while displaying its bad side at times and to hear mostly about Oracle with a brief biography of Ellison and how he commands the world's second largest software company, read it! PS I loved it.

This book is a comprehensive, detailed collection of Larry Ellison anecdotes and quotes from people around him. Author Matthew Symonds occasionally interjects himself, but mostly lets his sources talk. Perhaps for fairness, he quotes many people who disagree with each other about important decisions at Oracle. Perhaps for journalistic objectivity, he generally refrains from judgment. This shows the reader every perspective, even if it doesn't define context, chronology or direction. You get all of the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, though you may want a clearer box top picture. Some of the technology coverage will intrigue only tech industry buffs, but overall you will learn a great deal of interesting information about Ellison and Oracle. We also found that Ellison's character came most into focus when the book entered the world of yacht racing, his passion. The author also includes poignant, revealing anecdotes about Ellison's childhood and candid reports about his personal life. Larry Ellison was allowed to review the manuscript and his comments appear as counterbalancing footnotes on many pages. That guy, he always does things a new way - as you will see.

very interesting but not objetive

very interesting book overall, paints larry in a very (probably almost too) positive light. (the author was selected by larry to write the book.) the most interesting part is that larry adds his own notes to the bottom of various pages. the parts about sailing at the end were sort of boring, but it's nice to know that larry is planning on donating to medical foundations when he retires from oracle.

If so, then you'll no doubt identify with Taylor's story; a saga much like Sapphire's Push, that became the Academy Award-winning movie, Precious.
 My Prison Without Bars is a poignant, yet dark account of one woman's struggle to find "normal," as well as light and hope along her journey.

I wrote this novel in first person, from the mind, body, and heart of a child. I didn't want to shock or be grotesque...I wanted people to truly know the permanent damage that is inflicted, to know the depths of fear and self-loathing, and to really feel through the experiences of an abused child.

My goal was to exorcise my demons, gain some sense of self-esteem, heal myself, and finally tell my dirty little secret with full disclosure, while giving the reader full access to my heart. Oddly, I didn't find the outcomes I expected...absolution, understanding, and self-forgiveness. But I did find something I didn't expect...Acceptance.

My life is what it is. My experiences happened in the past. I don't live there anymore. I can choose to be angry and ashamed for the rest of my life, or I can accept my life for what it's been, what it is now, and move toward the light...and who knows, maybe help someone else along the way. Hence, my mission statement: The rest of my life will be the best of my life. It's not about my destination...it's about the journey that gets me there.

A Note from Me...

I have always been a strong proponent of our first amendment
right--freedom of speech. However, I also believe that people
have an equally important right to know exactly what they are
about to watch, hear, or read--thereby affording the opportunity
to make an informed choice about whether they want to partake
in the medium being offered.

That being said, please consider this short missive "fair warning."
This novel is based on a true story; actual events that happened
to me...the author. This novel has graphic, descriptive accounts of
child sexual abuse--adult content and language--and some disturbing,
violent scenes. It may "trigger" CSA victims.

My goal when writing this was not to be grotesque or
shocking. It was to take you, the reader, into the mind and body of
a child plagued by darkness--searching for the light. Descriptive
words are a writer's video clip or verbal camera if you will, creating
scenes and pictures in the mind of the reader. If I can make you
feel during any part of this book, I've done my job as a writer.

I do not wish to offend, but I make no apologies for my words,
descriptions, or the way I have told my story...if you, the reader,
choose to read this book.

My life of humiliation and shame is over--my shackles are
broken--I've come into the light--I've been set free.

Remember to breath

My Prison Without Bars is a hell of a read. The breath taking story telling of Taylor Evan Fulks childhood experiences is not for the feint hearted. I was forced to drop everything and simply read every single word carefully and deliberately. What happened to Taylor is horrifying and its really challenging to read the details of her experiences. And just when you think you can't take anymore, you find you can, you must, you have to. There's a girl in this story who needs you to feel for her and fight for her because no one else did.
So if you want to or need to know what it's really like to survive childhood sexual abuse, read it. My Prison Without Bars is one of those books that will change your life. The courage this woman has is beyond inspiring.

Real life for too many

My Prison with out Bars is a tough read....don't get me wrong, it's beautifully writen, but the subject matter is heart breaking. The ache in my heart for the little girl Taylor will not go away. I just wanted to swoop in and take her away from all of her horrors.

This book reminds us all of the abuses inflicted up children (both girls and boys) not only around the world but in our great nation. We need to be more observant of what is going on around us, and if we suspect abuse we need to report it, not turn a blind eye. We also need to make sure that children know that it is ok to speak up and that these acts are not acceptable behavior.

It is truly amazing that someone can survive these years and years of abuse and still turn out to be a productive member of society, wife and loving mother. It shows true character. I hope this book will inspire others and it shows that just becasue you were abused doesn't mean you will turn out to be an abuser.

Bravo To Taylor Fulks for being able to open her soul to us and share her innermost secrets and demons, you are an amazing lady!

Very sad story

This review contains spoilers***************This is such a heartbreaking true story that begins when Taylor is a young child. Her mother allows her step-father to sexually abuse Taylor. I say "allows" because her mom admits she knew what was happening to Taylor when Taylor is an adult. Yet after Taylor has 2 daughters of her own she lets the girls spend weeks (Christmas break, spring break)with her mentally ill mother. By this time her mom is on husband number 4 or 5. I was shocked she would allow her girls to stay with mom after everything her mother had done to her. Even as an adult her mother treated her badly. The story only continues being depressing when she becomes an adult, just as you think Taylor will be okay while going to nursing school and out on her own, she meets Tony( she ends up having her 2 girls by Tony, one pregnancy by him she aborted) and marries him.

Red flags waving all over the place in this relationship. He cheats on her, sometimes in front of her, gives her an STD, his money is his and her money she earns being a nurse is his. I felt so sorry for her being a doormat but I can only imagine the emotional problems she had after suffering the abuse from childhood, maybe that is why she took whatever mistreatment handed to her. Tony sat back and said nothing as his mother verbally tore Taylor apart, calling her names and totally disrespecting her. Yet Taylor took that too.
I was so disappointed in the end she stayed with this man, who seemed to constantly "tweak her nipples like he was tuning a radio" her words were something to that effect and I wanted to throw up every time she wrote that phrase, which was a lot.

When she gets pregnant the first time she states they used condoms then on the next page she says they didn't use condoms, wait a minute, what?? I was confused and her editor should have realized she just contradicted herself. That was the child she aborted.

Her mother was always in college during Taylor's childhood and ended up with her doctorate in psychology of all things. I had to laugh at that one. It just goes to show someone can be highly educated and still be a dumb loser. He mother was both dumb and a worthless loser. I still don't understand why she allowed her mother in her life, but more shocking than anything that Taylor let her sweet innocent daughters stay at her mother's home.

Several parts in this book Taylor would firmly tell people off that were treating her poorly only to never put any action into it. When I say action I mean she never left these people and moved on. She talked a good game but when it came time to play she only sat the bench. This was so sad to read. I give it 2 and a half stars.

The Value of Core Values

The first time I met Lisa, she asked me what my company's core values were? Being relatively new to the Global Infonet organization, I frankly, did not know. I stammered out something about 'truth and integrity', because I felt fairly confident that we had those values based on my brief experience with the principals. As I read the book and began to research my own company more thoroughly, I realized that I truly worked for a company that not only stated their core values, but lived them out in practice.

My company does custom software development, an industry that I have been involved with for nearly 30 years. Many custom software projects fail due to poor planning, poor definition, poor execution, or many other factors. My company incorporates our core values into our development process to assure that our projects are successful. These values include Simplicity, Transparency, Accountability, and Trust.

Every week, we review our list of projects and our CEO assures that each project is tracking according to these values. We, as a team, make sure that our projects are tracking properly by means of a weekly "scorecard" (Simplicity), and we share this information (good or bad) with the client (Transparency, Accountability), so that corrective action can be taken, and there are no surprises at the end of the project (Trust). Our client testimonials prove that our processes, rooted in integrity and fostering these core values, have lead to successful projects, and lasting truthful relationships with customers, who trust us to do the right thing, every time.

Surprisingly Impactful

I was surprised to discover a book about leadership that directs you to evaluate yourself (and your business) from the inside out. Lisa Huetteman's book shares story after story of successful businesses that operate according to a high ethical standard. It also includes the effects of what happens when businesses compromise their core values in pursuit of a profit. This book provides so many examples where core values can be applied in my business, I have no choice but to read it again.

Taking Core Values a Step Further

If you're like me, you've read a lot of management/business/strategic planning type books. They all tell you about the importance of measurable goals, of knowing where you're headed, and of having a mission statement and set values.

Where "The Value of Core Values" exceeds all others is in driving home the point that core values are not a set-it-and-forget-it thing. They are non-negotiables that should influence every aspect of your organization. This is accomplished through practical advice couples with real world case studies from successful organizations.

I had many "aha!" moments while reading this book. I was able to identify many instances and organizations that I've belonged to in my life that either were or were not living their core values, and I was often surprised by which were which.

Organizations must stick by their professed values. This book will put you and your organization on the right track. I highly recommend picking up a copy.
